Sophia Smith opened her first World Cup in style this weekend, putting her mark on the Golden Boot race with a brace in the USWNT’s 3-0 win over Vietnam.

More Details

Smith took an early lead for leading World Cup scorer before Ary Borges scored a hat trick in Brazil’s win over Panama on Monday.

Smith contributed to all three of the USWNT’s goals in the game, assisting Lindsey Horan’s strike in the 77th minute.

With Vietnam in a tight defensive shape, the U.S. left a few quality chances on the board in the win, including a saved Alex Morgan penalty.

“I came into it with the mindset that I was going to do whatever it takes to help this team win,” Smith told FOX Sports after the game.

Next up for the U.S. is the repeat of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup final against the Netherlands on Wednesday.

Meanwhile…

One of the largest scorelines of the World Cup so far belongs to Japan, who dominated their tournament opener against Zambia in a 5-0 win.

It was Japan’s widest margin of victory at a World Cup since 2003, and the second time they’ve won a World Cup game by 5+ goals.

Angel City forward Jun Endo had an impressive match in her return from a knee injury that had caused her to miss NWSL matches.

In an underwhelming weekend for the favorites (until wins for Brazil and Germany), consider Japan’s place as a World Cup contender stamped.
