Nigeria’s U-17 women’s football team made it two wins out of their first two Group A games to progress into the quarter-final of the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic on Saturday.

A brace from Bayelsa Queens’ Shakirat Moshood ensured that the 2022 bronze medalist sailed into the last eight in style with a 4-0 win over Ecuador in Santiago.
Moshood scored the first goal of the match in the 28th minute from the penalty spot after a foul inside the box.
The team’s top goal scorer in the qualifiers, Chidi Harmony, had her long rage effort hit the crossbar in the first half.
She would not be denied in the 54th minute as a mistake by Ecuador’s goalkeeper gave her a chance to poke the ball home into an empty net.

Peace Effiong made it 3-0 with a superb finish, while Moshood completed her brace with a left-footed strike in the additional minutes of the second half.
With a maximum of six points, the Flamingos top Group A ahead of Ecuador with three points.
Elsewhere, host, Dominican Republic and New Zealand picked their first points of the tournament after a 1-1 draw.

Both sides lost their opening games to Nigeria (4-1) and Ecuador (2-0) respectively.
Yeleinis Brito scored for the host whole Renata Mercedes’ own goal ensured that both sides shared spoils after 90 minutes.
Their final group match will determine the teams which will join Nigeria in the quarter final from Group A.
