A Change Of Venue The Solution After Inter Milan Rejected Another Change In Date For The Supercoppa Italia

Written By Onyeka Daniel

The new Supercoppa Italiana in Saudi Arabia has already hit problems, as fixtures had to change for Napoli–Fiorentina, Inter–Lazio and the Final, with another change now being proposed and this is expected to be resisted vehemently by Inter Milan and Napoli.

More Details

In the initial schedule, the competition was meant to run from January 4 to January 8, 2024. However, the Lega Serie A announced in October that a request from the Saudi hosts forced them to shift the dates and this was accepted. The tournament had until now only been a one-off match between the winners of the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia holders.

The Nerazzurri have won the trophy in each of the past two seasons. Two seasons ago, the Inter beat Juventus with a last-minute winner from Alexis Sanchez in extra time. That match was played at the San Siro in Italy. And last season, in Riyadh, Inter beat city rivals AC Milan 3-0 to get their hands on the trophy for the second season in a row.

However, it was expanded to a new Final Four format with semi-finals between Scudetto holders Napoli and Coppa Italia Finalists Fiorentina, plus Coppa victors Inter and Serie A runners-up Lazio. Originally, Napoli, Inter, Lazio and Fiorentina were meant to postpone their participation in the Serie A Week 19 games in order to play in the new format of the Supercoppa Italiana from January 4 to 8.

Napoli, Inter, Lazio and Fiorentina were meant to postpone their participation in the Serie A Week 19 games in order to play in the new format of the Supercoppa Italiana from January 4 to 8. However, it was moved to January 21-25 instead. At the moment, the semifinal matches of the Supercoppa will take place on the 21st and 22nd of January.

Then on January 25, the final will take place. Now according to a new report, this tournament is now set to get another date with the host country requesting that it should hold in February instead. According to Corriere della Sera, Saudi organizers have proposed moving the dates to the first week of February, but Inter Milan and Napoli have rejected the proposal for another postponement.

The report states that the clubs are concerned because of their Champions League commitments. Having qualified for the knockout stages of the UCL, the Nerazzurri will be hoping to replicate last season’s run where they made it to the final, or even go ahead to lift the trophy this time. Now according to a new report, a solution may have been found, a change of venue. The venue for the Supercoppa Italiana tournament will be moved to Riyadh from Jeddah within Saudi Arabia.

For some time, it had seemed that the Jeddah would host the matches in the tournament. The reason for this concerns the agreement that the Saudi organizers have with the Lega Serie A to host the tournament. The agreement stipulates that the Saudi organizers will host the next six editions of the tournament.

And two of those will take place in Riyadh, two in Jeddah, and two outside of Saudi Arabia, in the city of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Given the above-mentioned format, part of the choice of venue for this edition of the tournament must take into consideration future editions. Therefore, if Riyadh for example hosts this edition, then it can only host one future edition, hence the reason behind the move to Riyadh.

Meanwhile…

Turkey coach Vincenzo Montella believes Hakan Calhanoglu is the best midfielder in Serie A and ‘perhaps the best in the world.’ Calhanoglu has been playing a key role at Inter this season scoring seven goals in 17 appearances across all competitions and delivering one assist.

The Turkish midfielder scored five of his six Serie A goals from the spot, while his only goal from open play came in last week’s 3-0 win over Napoli at the Stadio Maradona. The former Milan star has become an idol in the black and blue side of the Navigli and was praised by his national team coach Montella on Thursday.

The Aeroplanino attended the Premio Euro Mediterraneo in Rome and told reporters: “To me, he [Calhanoglu] surely is the best midfielder in Italy currently and perhaps the best in the world.” Montela said he is following all Turkish players in Serie A, including Roma‘s Celik and Juventus‘ Yildiz.

The latter has been linked with Arsenal and Liverpool lately and Montella was asked if the 18-year-old should stay in Turin or leave, on loan or permanently, to get more playing time. “I don’t know,” he replied smiling. “Surely, I hope he can play consistently. One can grow even by not playing at Juventus. These are decisions I am not entitled to make.” He further added.
