More Details
Real Madrid suffered a defeat at the RCDE Stadium against Espanyol, a match heavily influenced by the officiating of referee Muñiz Ruiz and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), Iglesias Villanueva.
A particularly controversial moment occurred in the 62nd minute when Carlos Romero made a tackle from behind on Mbappé, catching him on the left knee. Despite the nature of the challenge, neither official deemed it worthy of a red card.
Romero later compounded Real Madrid’s frustration by scoring the decisive goal in the 85th minute, securing the three points for Espanyol. Earlier in the game, in the first half, Muñiz Ruiz disallowed a goal from Vini Jr. The reason given was a prior foul by Mbappé on Pol Lozano. Replays showed Mbappé had hold of Lozano’s neck as he entered the penalty area.

“The decision taken by the referee and the VAR is inexplicable. The most important thing is to protect the player and it was a clear foul, a very bad tackle with risk. Fortunately nothing happened, but there was a risk of injury. The VAR is also there for this. We find it inexplicable that they didn’t show the red card”, Ancelotti bemoaned in his post match pressers.
“It was a difficult, complicated game. We did some things well, we had good control, especially in the second half. We scored a goal that was disallowed, we scored a goal on the post and we had 20 shots on goal. The game was pretty much under control, but Espanyol, who played very well in transition, found us off balance and scored the goal. They played the game they wanted to.”
Real Madrid have now officially made known their grievances but it remains unknown if they are going to lodge an official complaint to La Liga to look into the case which might be bring about sanction for the officials if found guilty of making the wrong call although the league body is yet to say anything on it.
