Ronald Araujo

Ronald Araujo is back on transfer headlines despite recently signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2031 which includes a €60 million (£51m/$65m) release clause. Amid continued financial fair play constraints, Barcelona are reportedly open to the possibility of triggering Ronald Araujo’s temporary release clause, which would allow the club to generate significant funds in bid to return to LaLiga 1:1 salary rule and aid in their summer transfer plans.

More Details

Ronald Araujo made a U-turn on his future last season, penning a new deal despite strong interest from Juventus. His new deal includes a measure which allows for a summer exit. This clause reportedly becomes active from July 1 to July 15, during which time other clubs can secure the centre-back’s services for the fixed fee.

This short window presents a potential opportunity for Barcelona to ease their financial burden by facilitating a high-value sale.

According to Marca, while Ronald Araujo’s new contract includes a massive €1 billion release clause, it also contains a lesser-known provision that could pave the way for his departure this summer.

The Spanish outlet reveals that a special clause allows the defender to leave for just €70 million, but only if he expresses a desire to move within a narrow ten-day window between July 1 and July 10. This temporary discount presents a rare opportunity for Europe’s top clubs to sign one of the world’s most highly rated defenders at a relatively modest fee, especially considering current market inflation.

Despite not being a regular starter at Barcelona, Araujo has yet to decide on his future. While he reportedly had doubts back in January, he is not currently leaning toward an exit. As such, the situation remains poised for one of two outcomes: either Araujo leaves, providing a significant financial boost to Barcelona, or he stays for at least another season.

For the club, either scenario could be beneficial especially as they seek to free up wages and address their financial fair play challenges, with central defence seen as an area of squad depth.

The newly wed Uruguayan is expected to resume two weeks before the expected players return date in bid to return to full fitness following struggles with injury last season.
