AC Milan Back In For Young Striker, Left With Just One Centre-Back Before Their Final Game Of The Year

Written By Onyeka Daniel

AC Milan needed a late goal from Luka Jovic to grab a point against Salernitana and apart from the dropped points, the Rossoneri also lost their English defender, Fikayo Tomori to injury, adding to their long list of injured players.

More Details

Tomori was brought off during the second half in Salerno with a muscular injury to the flexor in his left thigh, and he’s expected to be out for at least two months after tests showed a myotendinous lesion to the right femoral bicep. Tomori’s injury is Milan’s 30th of the season.

The Rossoneri are also currently without centre-backs Malick Thiaw and Pierre Kalulu through long-term injuries and 34-year-old Simon Kjaer cannot be called upon for every match moving forward, but the manager should be able to call on Theo Hernandez to play in that role.

With The Growing Interest In Two Of Their Midfielders, Juventus Looking At Options In The Transfer Market

While the club have made the signing of a centre-back top priority during the January transfer window, they are also looking at other targets, especially a player for the future. Milan are reportedly closing in on a deal for highly-rated teenage talent Matija Popovic on a free transfer from Partizan Belgrade according to reports.

The 17-year-old, who will turn 18 on January 8, is now into the final week of his contract in the Serbian capital and will officially become a free agent on January 1. Reports have it that the Italian Club have reached an agreement with Popvic and his entourage over a five-year deal, which will run until the summer of 2029.

The report also details that Popvic will travel to Milan within the first two weeks of the new year and will officially put pen to paper on his Milan contract shortly afterwards. There had been some last minute reservations over Popovic’s signing from Milan’s side, as management had reportedly been concerned about filling up a valuable non-EU slot in the squad.

There had also been an attempted intervention from recent Club World Cup champions Manchester City, however their interest only intensified Milan’s desire to secure a deal for Popovic. Now both of those issues have been put to bed, Popovic is expected to become a Milan player in the coming weeks. With that solved, the club will look to sign a defender.

If Tomori is to join his teammates for an extensive spell in the medical room, multiple reports have suggested that Milan could turn to the loan market for reinforcements. One name that has been brought up by multiple outlets is PSG’s Nordi Mukiele.

The Frenchman, who made 100 Bundesliga appearances for RB Leipzig before joining the Parisians in 2022, has made just 7 Ligue 1 appearances this term plus a further two off the bench in the Champions League.

Milan would reportedly be willing to step forward for Mukiele if PSG were open to letting him leave on loan to get more game time in the second half of the season. Other names that have been suggested include West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer as well as Aston Villa’s Barcelona loanee Clement Lenglet.
