AC Milan Have Found A Solution For Their Defensive Crisis

Written By Onyeka Daniel

The Injury crisis currently going on at AC Milan got pretty much worse in their last game, a 2-2 draw away to Salernitana after England defender, Fikayo Tomori joined the list of injured players at the club.

More Details

With the winter transfer market fast approaching, the club is looking at options to and they look to have found a solution that wouldn’t require them spending much in terms of transfer fee and salary.

After Aston Villa said no to the possible signing of Clement Lenglet, the club have turned to one of their former players. Matteo Gabbia was sent to Villarreal on a season-long loan in the summer but could return to Milano in January.

The centre-back has made 13 appearances for the Spanish side this season and while some of them have been good, he hasn’t been convincing overall. Therefore, Milan are hopeful that an agreement can be reached to cut the loan short.

As reported by Calciomercato, Milan have already been in talks with Gabbia’s entourage, getting the ‘yes’ of the player for the return. Now, CEO Giorgio Furlani must convince Villarreal to cut the loan short and optimism is filtering regarding the matter.

Given that the likes of Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw and Tomori currently are on the sidelines, Gabbia’s return will not be enough for the Rossoneri. At least one more centre-back will arrive and there are many names on the wish list, such as Thilo Kehrer of PSG and of course Lenglet, even if that path seems less than assured.

It also remains to be seen what will happen to their manager, whose position is in real danger following the draw against Salernitana. Milan are evaluating the situation and the Primavera manager Ignazio Abate is one of the options for the rest of the season, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic giving him assist on the side, but the club doesn’t want to take any harsh decision yet.

Meanwhile…

Due to Tommaso Pobega’s injury, as well as Rade Krunic’s imminent departure, the Rossoneri are set to bring in at least one midfielder in January. Guido Rodriguez has ended up on their wish list and could arrive in a cut-price deal.

Pobega sustained an injury in the game against Monza and will be out of action for four months, following surgery. Krunic is also expected to depart the club, having not featured in the last five games, and Milan thus need to reinforce the squad.

According to a report from Italy, Guido Rodriguez is one of the top names on Milan’s wish list for the midfield. The Real Betis man could arrive in a cut-price deal worth around €10m, seeing as his contract with the Spanish side will expire in the summer. A majority of the deal, therefore, would be funded by the departure of Krunic.

Both Fenerbahce and Lyon have expressed an interest in the latter, with Milan asking for €5-7m to part ways with the Bosnian next month. It should also be noted that Ismael Bennacer is expected to take part in the AFCONs with Algeria, which will start in January. A midfield signing is thus almost a necessity for the Rossoneri.
