Written By Onyeka Daniel

The 22nd of may this year was a memorable day for Italian Serie A side, Atalanta, as they ended a very long wait to win a major trophy and they did it in emphatic style, lifting the Europa League title with a 3-0 triumph over a Leverkusen team that was arriving into that match with an unbeaten record all season long.

The La Dea have already experienced their two greatest ever nights against Liverpool and Marseille as their run to the 2020 Champions League quarter-finals came at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic which devastated Bergamo.

But this win definitely stole the show, winning their first major European trophy in 61yrs, and one of the protagonists of that night has also gotten the recognition he deserves. Nigerian striker/winger, Ademola Lookman stole the show in the 2023/24 Europa League final.

He scored a memorable hat-trick to beat Bayer Leverkusen single-handedly and inspire Atalanta to their first continental title. In addition to his illustrious performance in the grand final, the 26-year-old enjoyed a superb campaign on all fronts for the club, rightfully earning a flattering award as the club’s player of the season.

Lookman was under the spotlight as Atalanta halted Leverkusen’s unprecedented 51-game unbeaten run across all competitions in the iconic Dublin final. The Nigeria international became the first player to score a hat-trick in a one-legged European final since Pierino Prati in 1969, leading La Dea to a long-overdue continental success.

Equally impressive in Serie A, Lookman bagged 11 goals in 31 league games to help Atalanta secure a return to the Champions League group stages from league action after a two-year absence, getting the ticket ahead of the likes of Napoli and Roma. Indeed, he was one of Gian Piero Gasperini’s most consistent players in the just concluded season.

In 45 appearances across all competitions, Lookman got 17 goals and 10 assists, highlighting his significance to Atalanta. His superb form overshadowed outstanding exploits from Teun Koopmeiners, Ederson, Charles De Ketelaere and Gianluca Scamacca.

The hope is that this is one of many individual awards coming his way, with rumors spreading that he’s the strongest candidate to win the next CAF player of the year award, recently won by another Nigerian, Victor Osimhen, who also played in the Serie A, with Napoli.

Perhaps, he might even earn a move to a bigger club in recognition of his talents. It will definitely be a huge step up for a boy who started out with Charlton Academy, had spells with the likes of Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester, before finally finding his feet in Italy with Atalanta.

Meanwhile…

Newly promoted side, Como are continuing the work building up their squad for Serie A and have contacted Juventus to explore a move for Hans Nicolussi Caviglia, after signing Andrea Belotti from Roma recently.

After gaining promotion, their manager, the former Barcelona and Arsenal midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, has asked the club to bring in some experienced players to help them beat the drop and carve out a spot for themselves in the topflight.

According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, Nicolussi Caviglia looks set to leave Juventus this summer and Como have been in contact to request information about a possible transfer. He is valued at around €10m and has two years left on his contract in Turin.

A product of Juventus’ youth system, the 24-year-old Italian midfielder has never managed to carve out a regular spot for himself in the first team, spending time away on loan at Sudtirol, Perugia and Salernitana. This could put a spanner in the works of Atalanta, who had been hoping to include the player in the deal to sell Koopmeiners to Juve.
