AFCON 2021: Egypt Edge Cameroon On Penalties, To Face Senegal In The Final

Pharaohs of Egypt defeated host, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon 1-3 on penalties to qualify for the final of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

120 minutes of the game failed to produce any goals as referee Bakary Papa Gasama sent off Egyptian coach, Carlos Queiroz in the 90th minute.

The coach was initially issued a yellow card for his troubles on the torch line before being sent to the stands.

The Cameroonians had a bad day during the penalty shoot-out as Harold Moukoudi, James Lea Siliki, and Clinton Njie missed their spot-kicks while captain Vincent Aboubakar converted his first penalty kick.

On the part of the Egyptians, Zico, Mohamed Abdelmonem, and Mohanad Lasheen slotted in their penalty kicks to give Egypt a 1-3 win.

Senegal on Wednesday defeated Burkina Faso 3-1 to make it to back-to-back AFCON final.

The Teranga Lions reached the final of the last edition in 2019, losing 1-0 to Algeria.

Host, Cameroon will face Burkina Faso in the third-place match on Saturday, a repeat of the opening game of the tournament where the Indomitable Lions recorded a 2-1 win.

This will be the second tournament to be hosted by Cameroon in the space of a year where the team will suffer defeats in the semi-final.

As host of CHAN 2020 in 2021, Cameroon lost 4-0 to Morocco in the semi-final and also lost the third-placed match to Guinea.
