AFCON 2021: Indomitable Lions Win Dramatic Third Place Match On Penalties Against Stallions

Host, Indomitable Lions of Cameroon had to come from three goals down to defeat Stallions of Burkina Faso on penalties in the third-place match of the 2021 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Issa Kabore in the 24th minute sends a precise lofted cross into the box. Steeve Yago latches on to it and finishes with a quick shot into the top of the net to give Burkina Faso the lead.

Cameroon goalkeeper, Andre Onana, unfortunately, scores an own goal in the 43rd minute after deflecting the ball into his net.

After the interval, Burkina Faso made it three in the 49th minute as Bertrand Traore sends a long pass onto the head of Djibril Ouattara, who makes no mistake from close range and sends the ball into the right side of the goal.

In the 71st minute, Cameroon started a comeback as Stephane Bahoken fires a rebound into the middle of the goal after the ball breaks to him in the box.

Five minutes from full time, a corner kick is whipped in and Vincent Aboubakar is in the right place at the right time, planting a header perfectly into the left side of the goal.

The comeback was completed in the 87th minute as Vincent Aboubakar fires a rebound into the bottom left corner after the ball breaks to him in the box.

The game went into penalties where Cameroon emerged victorious 3-5 to win the bronze medal.

The final of the 2021 African Cup of Nations will take place on Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Stade d’Olembe, Yaounde.

The final will ensue between two of the continent’s footballing heavyweights, setting the stage for either Senegal to become the first maiden winners since the Chipolopolo of Zambia in 2012 or Egypt to claim a record-extending eighth title.
