AFCON 2021: Morocco Get The Better Of Ghana’s Black Stars In Group C Opener

The Atlas Lions of Morocco edged the Black Stars of Ghana at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Cameroon to draw the first blood in Group C of the ongoing AFCON.

Sofiane Boufal’s 83rd minute goal was enough for Morocco to see off Ghana in group C opening encounter. A loose ball fell to boufal inside the penalty area after a mix up involving captain Thomas Partey with the Angers attacker coolly slotting home from close range.

It was a cagey first half between the two powerhouses of African football as both sides played out a cautious approach in the first forty five minutes as there was no real threat on goal from both sides.
Vahid Halihodzic’s men did enjoy the better share of possession but couldn’t really create much going forward as the Ghanaian defence stood strong.
Ghana did stood their ground against the more attack minded North Africans but it wasn’t until the 72nd minute before Milovan Rajevac’s men registered their first shot on goal. They would go on to fire three more but none was good enough to beat the solid Yassine Bounou in goal for Morocco.
Morocco could have scored a second but Ghana goalkeeper Joseph Wollacott saved from close range to keep the score at just 1-0.
Morocco next face Comoros Island while Ghana will seek redemption against Gabon in their next game.

Zamalek forward Achraf Bencharki has been called in by Vahid Halihodzic to replace the injured Badr Benoun.
The Zamalek frontman missed out on the initial 25 man squad selected by the head coach to prosecute the AFCON but has now been called upon after injuries to a few of the players in camp.

Al Ahly centre back, Badr Benoun along with Al-Ain’s Soufiane Rahimi and AS FAR right back, Mohamed Chibi were called up to fill the remaining three slots for the Moroccan national team but an unfortunate injury has now ruled the Al Ahly player out of the tournament.
Morocco edged Ghana in the opening game of group C as they lived up to pre tournament hype.
