AFCON 2021 PREVIEW: Ghana vs Comoros

Written By Jacobs Dunga

Ghana’s Black Stars come into their last group game with a fading hope and reputation knowing that the pride of more than thirty million Ghanaians are at stake. Milovan Rajevac’s side are finding it difficult to get back to their glory days of the seventies and early eighties with just one point from their opening two games, the West African nation will be hoping Gabon drop points against already qualified Morocco while they fight to get past home bound Comoros Islands. It promises to be a fight to finish at the Stade Roumde Adjia come Tuesday evening.

Comoros came into the tournament as debutants hoping to at least salvage a national pride. The ride however hasn’t been as wished with a 1-0 deafest to Gabon in the first game immediately followed by a 2-0 loss at the hands of tournament favourites Morocco. They will however fancy their chance against sleeping giants Ghana, who themselves are seeking for their first win of this year’s tournament.

TEAM NEWS

Benjamin Tetteh will miss out for Ghana after receiving his marching orders a few minutes after coming on against Gabon.

Comoros come into the game with no injury concerns nor or suspensions.

STYLE

Ghana’s Black Stars have been far from convincing in their approach to games this tournament, the four time champions one time are pressing with all of their might and the next minute are seen on the back foot defending for their lives. One thing that’s synonymous with this team is that they lack ideas in the final third of the pitch which is the reason for their lone goal return after two games.

Comoros’ Les Coelecantes have been playing a decent style of football despite finding it difficult to break the more experienced sides in their first two games. Amir Abdou’s side have just a single shot on target in 180 minutes of football this AFCON which means they would have to move their passing game forward in other to create more chances if they’re willing to salvage anything from this tournament.

FORM

Ghana’s form recently has been nothing but patchy at best, with just a point gained out of a possible six, the 1976 champions are walking a thin rope.

Comoros have won just one of their last five games in all competitions and are yet to pick up any point in their first ever AFCON appearance.

HEAD TO HEAD

There has been two meetings between these two nations both of which came in 2015 during the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Ghana won the first leg of the matchups 2-0 while the second leg ended goalless.

Comoros will be looking to break the duck and get their first ever goal against Ghana and in the AFCON.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Andre Ayew scored Ghana’s only goal so far in the competition and in the process became the second player from the nation to score in six different AFCON tournaments after former captain Asamoah Gyan.
