AFCON 2021: Revealed! How Black Stars Will End Forty Years Trophy Drought

Its been forty years since the Black Stars of Ghana last lifted the Africa Cup of Nations and with the 33rd edition set to kick-off this Sunday in Cameroon, Ghana football legend Ibrahim Sunday believes the country can end their AFCON trophy drought despite not being among the favourites going into the tournament.

Although the four-time Africa champions lost their final preparatory game against Algeria 3-0 at the Education City Sports Stadium on Wednesday in what many tagged as an uninspiring performance from the team but legend Ibrahim Sunday who won the Africa Footballer of the Year in 1971 believes they can pull a surprise to emerge winners in Cameroon.

Ibrahim Sunday speaking to Edubiaseman fm said: “Every country qualified for the tournament [AFCON] and the dream of every country is to win the trophy, the trophy will be won by only one country.”

“It’s true Ghana has not won the trophy for 40 years but maybe this time, it could be ours.

“If you look at the teams that are going for the tournament, if we shall be truthful, the Black Stars are not favourites to win the cup, but favourites are not guaranteed to win tournaments.”

“Although the Black Stars are not favourites but if they work hard with good training, they can win the tournament.”

Ghana is housed in Group C of the tournament alongside Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.

The Black Stars come up against Morocco in their opening game of the tournament in Yaoundé on Monday.

The Black Stars of Ghana 28-man list have landed in Cameroon ahead of the 33rd edition of the AFCON.

The 4-time Africa champions contingencies is made up of 4 goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 7 midfielders and 9 attackers.
