AFCON 2025: Eric Chelle Focused On Mozambique As Super Eagles Target Quarter-Final Spot

Nigeria, three-time AFCON champions, are one of only two teams to post a perfect record in the group stage, winning all three matches. Chelle, however, insists that past results count for nothing as the tournament enters the knockout phase.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Malian tactician made it clear that his team’s full concentration is on overcoming Mozambique and sealing a place in the quarter-finals.
“Our objective is to win the next game. If God gives us the opportunity to reach the quarter-finals, then we will think about that,” Chelle said.
“For now, our attention is on Mozambique, and we are determined to win. Yes, there is pressure, but that is part of the job.”

Chelle also reflected on lessons learned from the 2023 AFCON, when he was in charge of Mali and suffered a dramatic quarter-final exit despite their opponents playing most of the match with 10 men.
“Since this AFCON began, I’ve tried to be more focused, more calm and more analytical during and after games,” he explained.
“I make an effort to block out distractions around the team and myself. That is part of my philosophy and my project. These are lessons I’ve learned.”

While acknowledging that experience alone does not guarantee success, Chelle stressed that mental readiness and preparation will be crucial.
“There will be two teams on the pitch. What matters is whether my team will be ready for the fight. Our focus is entirely on Mozambique,” he added.
The Super Eagles will be keen to avoid a repeat of the 2021 AFCON, where they also won all three group matches but suffered a shock Round of 16 elimination to Tunisia. This time, Nigeria are determined to ensure their strong group-stage showing translates into a deeper run in the tournament.
