Patson Daka struck deep into stoppage time to salvage a dramatic 1–1 draw for Zambia against Mali in their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) opener in Casablanca, as the Copper Bullets avoided defeat and extended their strong recent head-to-head record, losing just once in the last six meetings.

Mali created the first clear opening of the contest inside five minutes when Dorgeles Nene was found in space inside the penalty area, only for his effort to drift narrowly wide of the right post.

The first half was otherwise low on attacking quality and clear-cut chances, although Zambia were grateful to Benson Sakala on the half-hour mark, as his perfectly timed challenge denied Lassine Sinayoko a shooting opportunity from the edge of the area with a clear sight of goal.

With Zambia offering little threat going forward, Mali’s breakthrough appeared set to be decisive. However, the Copper Bullets produced a late twist in the second minute of stoppage time, when Daka rose to meet a Banda cross and powered a close-range header into the net, sparking wild celebrations among the Zambian supporters.

Mali were left to rue their earlier missed chances, with the knowledge that they remain unbeaten in their last 14 AFCON opening matches offering scant consolation as they surrendered early ground in a group already led by hosts Morocco.
