Holding a significant 35-place advantage in the FIFA rankings over Equatorial Guinea, the Stallions looked to impose themselves early. Key players Bertrand Traoré and Issoufou Dayo both saw early opportunities, yet the clinical edge was missing.
Despite the pressure, Juan Michá’s Equatorial Guinea side held firm. Their offensive output was limited to a wayward strike from Luís Asué and a long-range effort from José Machín that failed to test the keeper.
The best chance of the half fell to Dango Ouattara, who found himself unmarked on the left wing; however, his goalward effort was denied by a perfectly timed sliding challenge from Pablo Ganet. Ultimately, the first half was a stalemate defined by missed opportunities, ending without a single shot on target from either side.

The match swung early in the second half when Equatorial Guinea’s Basilio Ndong was sent off following a VAR-reviewed studs-up tackle. To compensate for the red card, manager Michá shifted to a defensive setup, bringing on Charles Ondo.
Despite being a man down, Equatorial Guinea’s defense held firm, even after Burkina Faso’s Lassina Traoré had a volleyed goal chalked off for offside by VAR.
In a stunning twist, Marvin Anieboh headed Equatorial Guinea into the lead in the 85th minute. However, the drama was far from over; Georgi Minoungou equalized in stoppage time, and Edmond Tapsoba completed a miraculous 98th-minute comeback to secure a 2-1 victory for Burkina Faso.
