It was a tight game between the two sides with Cameroon proving to be the better side in the first half with some precise passing game.
Rigobert Song’s side did everything but convert their chances in the first half of the tie.
The first half ended goalless with optimism high on the West African side coming for the second 45 minutes.
However, it was Cameroon born striker Breel Embolo who sent the European nation into the lead after just three minutes of the restart from a Shaqiri square ball.
The 25 year old did a muted celebration out of respect for his country of birth who must now be rueing not fully convincing the man to represent his fatherland.
Andre Onana denied a point blank shot from Vargas as the Swiss aide tried to double their lead.
There were not much action in the second half after the goal had been scored as Switzerland calmly managed the situation to see out the win over the Africans who now walk a tight rope in qualifying for the next round.
