After Chelsea, Arsenal’s Offer For Brighton Midfielder Rejected

Written By Onyeka Daniel

It could become another transfer battle between Chelsea and Arsenal in this winter transfer market as the pair now shift their battle to Brighton midfielder, Moises Caicedo.

More Details

The two clubs had been in the running for the signing of Mykhailo Mudryk, a battle won by Chelsea, largely due to how they structured their offer as the Shakhtar Donetsk officials confirmed that the offer from the two clubs were similar.

Now the battle has shifted to Caicedo, with Chelsea seeing their €55 million bid rejected few days ago and Arsenal have now gone a step further by offering €60 million.

Brighton have no intention of selling the Ecuador international in the January transfer window and any interested clubs will have to wait until the summer to do a deal. According to reports, Caicedo is ‘considering handing in a transfer request’ after being left disappointed that the club rejected the bid from Arsenal.

Further adding that ‘Caicedo is also concerned he may not get chance to join Arsenal or Chelsea in the summer as they’re actively looking for midfielders now.’

But coach of the team, Roberto De Zerbi pretty much confirmed that Caicedo will be staying until the end of the season when asked about interest from Arsenal in his pre-match press conference ahead of their FA Cup match against Liverpool on Sunday.

De Zerbi told reporters on today: “I think he is a good guy, he is only focussed on Brighton. I hope he can stay with us until the end of the season. My opinion is that is the best solution for him and us.

“I can understand big clubs want our young players like [Alexis] Mac Allister, [Kaoru] Mitoma, Caicedo, Solly March, but the decision is only between the player and club. I spoke to [Caicedo] on Wednesday and told him my opinion, it is difficult to change teams in the season. You can find more problems. It is important for him to stay another four months with us.”

Reacting to reports that the player is unsettled, the Brighton coach insisted that the midfielder is calm, he added:

“He’s relaxed. I spoke to him like a father, not a coach. I understand when a player has a possibility to change team and go to a big team, [it is a big moment]. My work is to give the style of play, but also advice on his career and life.

“I have to repeat. The problem is never selling, but who you want to buy. You can improve if a big player leaves; we have to know our level. Together we want to improve. Interest in our players is good for us.”

On possible incomings at the Amex Stadium, De Zerbi continued: “I don’t expect anything. I’m used to speaking abot the transfer market. I think if we stay like this I’m happy, but I haven’t had any news on the transfer market.”

Meanwhile…

Arsenal have been boosted in their bid to sign Barcelona forward, Ferran Torres as reports have now emerged that the Catalans are now open to the idea of selling the former Manchester City player if they receive a reasonable offer in the summer. After missing out on the signing of Mudryk, the Gunners had been looking to sign Torres, but their approach was rejected.

Now with the Spanish side still not out of their financial difficulty, selling a player is now being considered and Torres is one of the few players that can fetch a sizable sum in the transfer market, given his young age.

Since the start of the current season, Torres has often found himself on the bench rather than starting games. Xavi had preferred to go with summer arrival Raphinha and Ousmane Dembele on the wings. And in recent games, Gavi has come in that position, thereby reducing his relevance at the Camp Nou.
