Pedri has become a pivotal part of the team’s midfield since his emergence in 2020/21 with a release clause of €1 billion and now the club are said to be moving on to other players in the squad, especially those with an expiring contract and to this end are set to make Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto their next priority.
With both players sitting on a contract that expires in less than a year, it is imperative to try and reach an agreement or at least know if they intend to continue with the club but with the recent financial difficulties experienced by the club, it would be difficult to meet the player’s contractual demands as the club want to even reduce their salary further or better still, spread the cost over a longer contract to help the club get through this difficult times.
“It has to be understood that the processes [contract negotiations] are a little longer and more difficult than in the past,” director of football Mateu Alemany explained.
It sounds like both (Sergi Roberto and Ousmane Dembele) will end up staying – but both will need to lower their salaries, perhaps moving to a more bonus-based system. Whether Barca are able to persuade them to accept that is a different question.
Meanwhile…
Pedri who recently signed a new contract at Barcelona has come out to play down the significance of his humongous release clause. The teenager has a release clause that is the highest in human history, higher even that that of Lionel Messi.

“The clause is an indication of what the club is betting on you,” Pedri detailed at his renewal press conference. “I care more about the club’s project than the clause. “Being at this club I aspire to win everything every season.” He instead expressed his happiness with the fact that he’s at Barcelona,
“I’m very happy to sign until 2026 and I hope there will be more years.” “It’s a very happy day for me, my hope is to be here for many years, it’s true that it’s a difficult moment right now, but this is the best club in the world,” he continued.
