Mohamed Abdelmoneim

Written By Omolagba Oluwayemi

Al Ahly have recalled defender Mohamed Abdelmoneim from Future FC following his impressive performances in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

More Details

Future FC took Mohamed Abdelmoneim on a season long loan from Al Ahly after he failed to breakthrough into the main team although Smouha wanted him on a permanent deal after impressing them during his loan stint with them but Al Ahly preferred loan him to newly promoted Future FC.

A product of Al Ahly’s youth system, Abdelmoneim was promoted to the first-team in 2020, but failed to make a single appearance under then-head coach Rene Weiler and was sent to Smouha on a six-month loan.

Impressing in Alexandria, Abdelmoniem saw his loan extended by Smouha for a further season, where he was an integral part of their defence at 21, before returning back to Al Ahly last summer.

Partnering another on-loan Al Ahly teammate Saad Samir, Abdelmoniem played every minute of Future’s opening seven league games, which earned him a spot in Egypt’s squad in the Arab Cup.

Abdelmoniem didn’t get much playing time in Qatar, featuring just twice against Jordan and the hosts, with Carlos Queiroz preferring Ahmed Yassien over him as the backup choice to Ahmed Hegazi and El-Wensh.

But surprisingly, the 22-year-old’s name was included in the final squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations over the likes of Ahmed Yassien and Yasser Ibrahim.

Despite making the final squad to AFCON, the presence of Ahmed Hegazi, Mahmoud Hamdy El-Wensh, Ayman Ashraf, Mahmoud Alaa meant Abdelmoneim playing chances are very slim.

However, Abdelmoneim came under the spotlights as just 12 minutes into the opening game against Nigeria, Akram Tawfik was brought down and tore his ACL, which led Carlos Queiroz to rely on the youngster at right-back.

Despite excelling against the Super Eagles for 78 minutes, Abdelmoneim started on the bench against Guinea-Bissau, but once again he was called upon after Mahmoud El-Wensh picked up an injury at half-time.

He was finally given the nod to start against Sudan, and not only did he help the Pharaohs keep a clean sheet, but scored the winner in his only fifth international cap to send Egypt to the round of 16.

A clean sheet and a confident penalty against the Elephants followed by yet another impressive 120 minutes against Morocco proved that Egypt has a gem on its hands for the future.

And Al Ahly didn’t waste much time and managed to negotiate with Future to recall the defender and instead send their young talent Abdelrahman Mano on loan while extending the loan of Karim Nedved for a further year.

Not only Abdelmoniem will make his finally awaited Al Ahly debut, but will also get registered in their CAF Champions League squad for the upcoming season although he will have to battle it out against the likes of Badr Benoun, Ayman Ashraf, Yasser Ibrahim, Rami Rabia, and Mahmoud Metwally for a spot in the starting XI.

Meanwhile…

Al Ahly, have reportedly extended the contracts of three academy in Mostafa Shobier, Mohamed Noseir and Abdelrahman ‘Mano’.

With many of their players out of the roster due to injury or because they’re currently in competing in the Africa Cup of Nations, first team head coach Pitso Mosimane had to rely on players from the club’s youth teams during the first edition of the Egyptian League Cup.

Al Ahly were unable to win any of their League Cup games, with still one game left, despite solid displays from the very young side.

Three players caught the attention of viewers during the tournament, which were goalkeeper Mostafa Shobier, son of legendary goalkeeper Ahmed Shobier, defender Mohamed Noseri and midfielder Abdelrahman ‘Mano’.

It appears that their performances didn’t go unnoticed by the Al Ahly board, who decided to offer each one of them a new four-and-a-half-year contract, keeping them until 2026, according to several local reports.
