Portugal were dealt a serious blow on Thursday evening in Dublin as they lost to a brave and determined Ireland side.

The Roberto Martinez led side had been invincible in their group until the last couple of games that have now seen them concede four times.

Troy Parrott was the hero for the British nation as he twice found the back of the net to resuscitate his country’s hope of qualifying for the World Cup.

After the game, Al Hilal’s Ruben Neves expressed his bitterness at the outcome of the game, more so, their performance.

“It was a bad game from our side.”

“That’s the only explanation you can find. Fortunately, we only depend on ourselves and we have a home match that allows us to qualify for the World Cup, which is our goal.”

“It’s up to us to respond in the best way.” He said in a post match interview.

“We are professionals, these are things we don’t want to happen but we know that they can happen, it would be worse if we didn’t rely on ourselves to be in the World Cup.”

“This defeat will not be the one that shakes us.”

“We have everything to achieve our goal.”

Portugal are still top of the four team group with ten points despite their first loss in the group.

They host already beaten Armenia in their last game knowing that a win will deal their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
