Alexia Putellas Retains Ballon d’or Award

FC Barcelona and Spanish midfielder, Alexia Putellas has retained the 2022 Ballon d’or Award for the Women’s Players of the year.

The award ceremony was presented to her during the 66th edition of the award on Monday.

Putellas won the award ahead of Aitana Bonmati, Sam Kerr, Beth Mead, and Lina Oberdorf

The Barcelona captain emerged as the top goal scorer at the end of the 2021/2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL).

Her goal-scoring feat led her side to the final of the UEFA Women’s Champions League where they lost to the eventual winner, Lyon.

Putellas won the award despite the injury that ensured that she couldn’t take part in the 2022 Women’s Euro.

She thus became the first woman to win the Ballon d’or twice after Lyon forward, Ada Hergerberg won the first edition.

The Ballon d’or award is organised by France Football Magazine annually to celebrate best football players in Europe.

Senegalese forward and captain, Sadio Mane became the first player to win the Socrates Award.

FC Barcelona’s Gavi also won the Kopa Award for the best young player for men.

Robert Lewandowsky smiled home with the Herd Muller Award for his goal-scoring feats at Bayern Munich scoring 57 goals in his last season at the thbefore moving to FC Barcelona.
