The Cameroonian spent six years in the first team of Ajax Amsterdam after graduating through the youth ranks. His contract however ended in the last season and he has now joined Inter Milan for a new adventure.

Speaking to the microphones of DAZN, Onana spoke about his first days at Inter and how he has learned a lot in the few days he’s been here. “The first days went well, I learned a lot. I’m very happy to be here at this club very close to the players.

The 26 year old goalie sees Serie A as a whole new and stiffer challenge compared to Spain and the Netherlands. “Everything is going very well I’ve been to Barcelona, to Amsterdam: standing here I noticed that there are different things but also things similar to Spain. The most different one is the training of the goalkeepers, I’m really liking here. Here you see football differently, there is another form of thinking and this will help me a lot.

On the conviction he got from Ausilio and Inter legend Samuel Eto’o before making his decision: “Inter are a very big club. From the moment I spoke with Ausilio immediately he gave me his word and kept it. The speech he gave me touched me and I was very happy. I already knew Inter for Eto’o, I talked to him and he told me that this is the right club for me, with ambitions and that he always aims to win: he told me that I am a winner and he is the right club for me.

Handanovic has been at Inter for a decade and with Onana around now, the Slovenian could be counting his days as the Nerazzurri’s undisputed number one.

Meanwhile…

Onana has challenged Handanovic to the starting spot as he made it clear he came here to play and help the team win.

38 year old Handanovic has been the undisputed starter for the San Siro giants since arriving from Udinese in 2012 and saw the club through a difficult era up until the Scudetto triumph.

The new import however fancy his chances but has left the decision for the coach to make while protecting the interest of the team.

“Handanovic is a great goalkeeper, he has done a lot for this club, he is the captain: I have to respect him because he has done a lot. But I came here to play and respect the coach’s choices: in the end he decides and we have to listen to him. If he decides it’s better to start with him, that’s fine, the important thing is that he wins the group. I’m glad I arrived in a healthy group: if he has to be on the bench, I’ll sit quietly rooting from there. It’s a competitive championship, but the most important thing is to focus on us and not look at others: if we’re okay we can win, I don’t think about opponents.

Inter Milan lost the Scudetto to city rivals AC Milan after reserve goalkeeper Andrei Radu made a blunder against Bologna in a game that would have seen Inter climb to the summit of the table had they picked up maximum points.
