Tottenham under the stewardship of Mauricio Pochettino eventually won the race to sign the then 22-year-old for a fee of £55m. He started like he was going to replicate that form that brought him to England but gradually regressed in performances and eventually lost his place in the team.

Three managers have passed since his arrival and Ndombele is yet to establish himself in the team. With Antonio Conte’s arrival, the 24-year-old is now playing under the fourth manager in just two years at the club.

Conte has however issued a warning to the seven time capped French international to shape up and seize his opportunity or face further axe from the team.

Conte has urged Ndombele to put the team performance ahead of playing for himself. The Frenchman could be thrown in from the start with Oliver Skipp suspended and Pierre Emile Hojbjerg just recovering from a leg injury.

“Yeah, I have seen that many managers struggle about this situation, about the position – for sure Tanguy has the quality,” said Conte in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“At the same time he has to understand that there is a team and he has to play into the team.”

“I think it means that it is important to keep order and to do what the position asks you to do.

“For sure with Tanguy we are working. We are working very hard. He has to work much more than the others, because he has talent but he has to put this talent into the team for the best of the team, not for the single player.”

“In my football I have an idea and in this idea there are tasks for the players. Every single player has to know what he has to do. Otherwise if every player just goes and runs around the pitch, I think it will be a mess.”
