The 28 year old German defender who moved to Chelsea from AS Roma in 2017 helped the English club to Champions League glory last term where he formed a solid defensive unit with the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen, both of whom would have their contracts expire come season of the season.

Talks of a new deal at Stamford Bridge haven’t progressed past the initial stage as Thomas Tuchel now seems resigned to losing the German international defender who has proven to be one of the best defenders in the Premier League in the last year.

Real Madrid have been credited with an interest in Rudiger over the past months but that move could now be a forgone motive as Marca reports that the 28 year old’s wage demands which is believed to be £200,000 a week is too outrageous and thus forced Madrid to abandon the deal.

Other top clubs such as Bayern Munich and PSG would be on alert as they also would fancy the possibility of reinforcing the lanky defender.

Ruben Neves has been advised to ignore advances from Manchester United and focus on winning with Wolves as the Ralf Rangnick led side doesn’t guarantee a better chance of silverware.

Neves has been in the radar of United for a while with the Portuguese international open to moving to Old Trafford considering Wolves would sell for a worthy price.

Neves was a part of the Wolves squad that won 1-0 at Old Trafford on Monday for the first time in 42 years with another fine display in front of the Old Trafford crowd further rekindling their interest.

Danny Mills however believes the chances of the 24 year old winning a trophy is higher if he stayed at Wolves than making the move to United.

“Wolves have got as much of a chance at winning the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup,” the former Man City and England defender told talkSPORT on Kick Off.

“Manchester United aren’t going to win the Premier League, and they’re not going to win the Champions League.

“Wolves might get into the Europa League, and they’ll have a better chance of winning the Europa League than Manchester United will have at winning the Champions League.”

When asked about Neves’ situation heading into the transfer window, manager Lage said: “Ruben feels this is his second home – and happiness comes with that.

“That’s good, but it’s another thing to convince him to stay. It’s not about a contract or money. It’s about creating a big team that fights for different things.

“Ruben is in that place where he needs a different challenge. And we also want a different challenge for the club.”
