Sudan revitalized their standing in Group E on Sunday with a narrow 1-0 win against Equatorial Guinea at Casablanca’s Mohamed V Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, the deadlock was broken in the 74th minute when a Sudanese free-kick led to an own goal by defender Saul Coco. Having both entered the match seeking their first points following opening-round losses, the win puts Sudan back in contention for the title.

In their first-ever AFCON finals encounter, Sudan secured a narrow victory over Equatorial Guinea during matchday two. Sudan set the tone early when Joha Otenyal’s powerful left-footed shot forced a sharp save from goalkeeper Jesus Owono.

Equatorial Guinea nearly equalized in the second half through veteran striker Emilio Nsue. Just moments after being substituted onto the pitch, the Intercity forward fired a right-footed shot that narrowly missed the target, grazing the outside of the post.

As the match entered the final five minutes, a determined Nsue was seen rallying his teammates to intensify their pressure. However, Sudan’s defense held firm, successfully neutralizing the late threats to claim the three points and maintain their third-place position in the group.

“Like I said before the game, Equatorial Guinea has got a lot of experienced players, and going by their performance you could see it is a team that knows itself very well, but from us you could see it was a team, looking to win the game, I don’t want to talk about Sudan, because we have put politics ahead of the game,” said Appiah after the game.

“At the end of the day we have a fighting spirit to make sure any time we get into the game, we try to play our best to the end of it.

“The ambition is how can I play well to make sure I win this competition. As at now, we did not start well, but the most important thing is to make sure we win our games, to make sure we win the AFCON. That is our aim.

“We achieved what mattered most, and we are mindful of these objectives of reaching the furthest stage possible. We are not here to just participate.”
