The Iranian Football Federation have rejected Qatar’s request to change stadiums for the semi final tie between both nations.

The encounter which is scheduled for the Al Thumama Stadium on Wednesday was requested by the Qatari Football Federation to be moved to Al Bayt in a plot to accommodate more fans.

However, the Iranians rejected the approach with insistence on the tie being played at the original venue reveals Hatam Shiralizadeh.

Al Bayt Stadium which has a seating capacity of 68,000 would have allowed more Qatari fans considering they’re playing at home.

Qatar are the defending champions and hosts of the ongoing Asian Cup and trade tackles with three time winners Iran for a place in the finals.

Iran got the better of Japan in their quarter final tie while Qatar got past Uzbekistan.


The Al Thumama Stadium houses 44,400 spectators and is one of the biggest in Qatar.

Of the 44,400 available seats, only 1,000 have been allocated to Iran ahead of their tie against the hosts reports Hatam Shiralizadeh.

It promises to be a breathtaking e counter between the two Islamic states with Iran having the edge over their rivals in previous meetings.

Team Melli have won all four previous encounters between the two sides without conceding a single goal.

They will hope to maintain that record come Wednesday as they search for their first Asian Cup title since 1976.
