Asisat Oshoala: Barcelona Forward Ruled Out Of WAFCON 2022 Like Alexia Putellas

Super Falcons of Nigeria and FC Barcelona striker, Asisat Oshoala is out of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2022) in Morocco.

The news was confirmed on Wednesday in a Tweet on Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) verified Twitter handle and in a press release by the NFF Communications Department.

According to the tweet, Oshoala sustained a Grade 2 Medial Collateral Ligament strain in the game against South Africa.

The former FC Robo Queens and Rivers Angels players suffered the injury in a contest with a South African in the 6th minute of the encounter with the Banyana on Monday, and would be out of action for between two and three weeks, with another one or two weeks period for recovery.

She is due back in Spain on Thursday.

The news means that Nigeria will continue its WAFCON 2022 journey without its top striker as the team faces Botswana tomorrow and later Burundi in the last Group C game.

Oshoala’a captain at FC Barcelona Femeni and FIFA TheBest Player of the year winner, Alexia Putellas on Tuesday was also ruled out of the UEFA Women’s Euro 2022 slated to kick off later today during training with the Spanish national team.

The double news is indeed the one to be worried about for both Nigeria and Spain but both teams will forge ahead without their major strikers.

Asisat Oshoala was among the thirty (30) players nominated for the 2022 Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) Women’s Player of the year award.

She was nominated alongside three other Super Falcons players; Chiamaka Nnadozie (Paris FC), Rasheedat Ajibade (Atletico Madrid), and Uchenna Kanu (UANL Tigres).

South Africa after a 2-1 win over Nigeria on Monday dominated the nominees’ list with six (6) players.

Botswana (2), Burundi (1), Cameroon (4), Ghana (3), Morocco (3), Namibia (1), Togo (1), Tunisia (2), Uganda (1), and Zambia (2) also have players on the list.
