Aston Villa Star’s Stance On Future Revealed Amid Manchester United Links

Written By Albert Echatah

Aston Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez, is reportedly eager to join Manchester United, with his representatives already contacting the club.

More Details

This comes as Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, is keen to avoid a repeat of the dismal 2024-25 season, which saw the team finish in 15th place, their lowest ever Premier League standing.

While Amorim has prioritized strengthening the attack, improving the goalkeeping situation is also a high priority.
Current shot-stopper Andre Onana has faced significant criticism, leading to calls for a new number one.

Martinez has a strong track record, including winning the 2022 World Cup with his national team and helping Villa secure a Champions League spot in 2023-24 by finishing fourth.

However, at 33, his long-term viability in top-tier domestic football is questionable, making a costly move to financially constrained Manchester United a risk.

A £40 million transfer fee for Martinez would be hard for Manchester United to justify, though a swap deal involving Marcus Rashford going to Villa Park could be a possibility, despite interest in Rashford from other European clubs.

Manchester United needs a new goalkeeper if they want to qualify for European competitions, even if a top target like Martinez is too expensive.

Current keeper Onana’s frequent mistakes, including one that arguably led to Tottenham Hotspur’s winning goal in the Europa League final, have undermined the team’s defense. Therefore, United should consider more affordable options to replace Onana.
