Written by Oluwadamilola Olaleye
Following the exit of Sporting director Dan Ashworth after been reportedly sidelined during key decisions within the club, Manchester United have moved to replace him after earmarking Athletic Club’s Mikel Gonzalez as his potential replacement.
More Details
Ashworth whose reputation was built on years of successful work with England, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Newcastle United joined Old Trafford last summer after a protracted negotiation process that cost the Red Devils nearly €5 million.
However, his tenure at the club was short-lived as Manchester United announced his departure by mutual consent after only five months hence the move for Mikel Gonzalez who is believed to be suited to replace him but despite this obvious interest, the Basque club remains optimistic about retaining the services of Gonzalez.

Gonzalez operates within the unique and restrictive environment of San Mamés where Athletic Bilbao’s policy dictates that they only sign players born in the Basque Country (spanning regions of Spain and France) or those who have developed their football skills at a Basque club.
While Athletic Bilbao acknowledges the attention Gonzalez has attracted, they have unofficially stated that he is solely committed to the club. The 37-year-old Gonzalez, whose contract runs until 2026 is currently overseeing one of Athletic’s most successful periods in the 21st century under the guidance of manager Ernesto Valverde whose contract runs till the end of the season but the club is working on his extension.
