Athletic Club star Nico Williams is back on the transfer headlines again after been linked all summer to Barcelona but the deal failed to materialize due to Barcelona’s financial incapability. Arsenal are the latest English Premier League club linked to the Spanish winger with talks already been opened between both parties.

More Details

The future of Spanish international Nico Williams who currently has a €60 million release clause embedded in his contract with Athletic Bilbao is increasingly the subject of speculation, with a potential summer transfer appearing to be a distinct possibility.

Adding fuel to this speculation is the recent appointment of Andrea Berta, formerly of Atletico Madrid to the role of sporting director at Arsenal. It appears Berta is wasting no time in his new position as reports from Footmercato indicate that he engaged in a meeting with Williams camp just days ago.

As Mikel Arteta orchestrates a significant overhaul of his squad, a flurry of activity is anticipated in the upcoming summer transfer window for Arsenal in North London, with both arrivals and departures expected. The midfield is an area requiring particular attention as the club will likely need to source replacements for both Thomas Partey and Jorginho.

To this end, Arsenal are reportedly making considerable progress in securing Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, with the final details of the transfer being ironed out, positioning him as a likely summer addition.

Beyond midfield reinforcements, Nico Williams is identified as another key target for the Gunners. However, a significant hurdle in their pursuit of the Spanish international lies in the realm of his wage demands. Furthermore, Williams’ deep-rooted affection for his boyhood club, Athletic Bilbao, presents a considerable pull that could ultimately lead to him opting to remain in Spain for the foreseeable future.

The exact reason behind the phone call between Berta and Williams’ camp has not been disclosed. However, it was possibly connected to the fact that Arsenal would ideally like to know the player’s final decision soon.

As things stand, Williams has yet to make up his mind regarding a summer transfer. His full focus for now remains on his boyhood club, who are still fighting on two fronts.
