Spanish giants Atlético Madrid have used the Frenchman extremely sparingly this season, only starting him after the hour mark in a frantic bid to get out from under a clause that could force them to shell out a fortune for the attacker at the end of the campaign.
There is a provision in Griezmann’s loan agreement that requires Los Rojiblancos to pay €40 million if the attacker plays for at least 45 minutes in 50% of the games in which he is eligible. The previous semester, he had already participated in more than 80% of the available games.
And this season, Atlético Madrid has only given him a few minutes of playing time.
Due to their belief that the permanent acquisition clause has already been activated after the 2021/22 season, Barcelona is now seeking legal intervention to force Atletico Madrid to fulfill the full sum.
With one of the top legal teams in La Liga, Los Rojiblancos feel they have every right to limit Griezmann’s playing time in order to avoid having to pay a fee. They are only attempting to exploit a gap in the contract in this way.
The case of Griezmann pertains to Atléti giving the Frenchman the opportunity to train with the team, along with the Social Security, remuneration, and other benefits, despite the fact that the Spanish Workers’ Statute mandates that the workers have the right to demand corresponding activity agreed upon in the employment contract.
As a result, the Atletico Madrid board has taken the recent rumors with a grain of salt and is unfazed by Barcelona’s recent efforts.

Meanwhile…
Barcelona loanee Antoine Griezmann has found himself in a strange situation at Atlético Madrid this season.
Due to a condition in his loan that specifies that if he plays more than half the minutes he is eligible for, Atletico will have to pay Barcelona €40 million, the Frenchman has only participated in fewer than half of his games this season.
Griezmann is still optimistic despite the odd situations he has found himself in.
“It is what it is, it’s out of my hands. Grateful to God for being here. My family is happy, I of course want more, but I am going to give everything I have in the minutes I have,“ he said.
