Atletico Madrid have now identified Villarreal’s Álex Baena as a primary target for bolstering their squad in the approaching season as per Diario AS. The 23-year-old winger born in Almeria has demonstrated exceptional form for the Yellow Submarine throughout the current campaign and his qualities are highly regarded by Diego Pablo Simeone.

The Atletico manager reportedly views Baena as the perfect addition to solidify the left side of his team. While Baena’s contract with Villarreal extends until 2028 and includes a €60 million release clause, a figure that Atletico Madrid would likely find challenging to meet, the club is already exploring alternative strategies to facilitate the transfer.
To this end, sources suggest that discussions are underway at the Wanda Metropolitano regarding a potential player-plus-cash offer with Rodrigo Riquelme being considered as a key component to entice Villarreal into accepting a deal.
Furthermore, his former manager, Unai Emery, has reportedly held a long-standing desire to bring Baena to Aston Villa, indicating a strong belief in the player’s capabilities. While Villarreal are understood to be open to a transfer, they have set their valuation for Baena at approximately €50 million for the summer window.
With a burgeoning relationship between Atletico Madrid and Villareal, a deal could be sealed as the latter reportedly have admirations for Riquelme who is also under contract until 2028 although there’s no formal proposal on the table yet as both sides push to end the season on high.
