Atletico Madrid Make First Contact With Bayer Leverkusen For Ecuadorian Defender As Diego Simeone Seeks Summer Defensive Rebuild
Written by Olaleye Oluwadamilola
This summer, Atletico Madrid want to revamp its defense and it looks like at least one of the players they wish to add will be a younger player. They have their eye on Piero Hincapie of Bayer Leverkusen, one of their central defenders.
More Details
The 22-year-old defender from Ecuador has been outstanding for the Bundesliga champions this season, and according to Diario AS, Atletico has spoken with Leverkusen about Hincapie. Even though it was only a preliminary inquiry, Atletico suggested a price of less than €30 million, but die Werkself firmly declined.
While Hincapie has long been a target for Atletico, the best teams in Europe are suddenly considerably more interested in him.
The fact that Leverkusen has committed to only losing one of their great players this summer and keeping the other key players is a complicating element, as it will allow Xabi Alonso to continue building for next season.
Los Colchoneros appear to desire a younger defender who can lead their backline for many years to come, as evidenced by the report that Atletico has been in contact with Hincapie after previous connections to Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and Cristhian Mosquera. Naturally, there is a greater cost associated with that purchase.

After defeating Champions League champion Manchester City on Wednesday via penalty shootout, Real Madrid was ecstatic to advance to the semi-finals. But they won’t let their victory get to them; instead, they’ll focus on their next objective: closing the Barcelona season.
Los Blancos will not let weariness or aches and pains be an excuse in Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona, as they aim to cap off an incredible week. This is despite playing 120 minutes of intense football on Wednesday.

Relevo said they are excited about the opportunity to virtually win the championship against their bitterest opponents, closing the deficit to 11 points with six games remaining if they win. It would also mean a trophy-less year for Barcelona and the dismissal of Xavi Hernandez after his final season as manager.
