According to Tom Roddy, English Premier League side, Chelsea are close to reaching an agreement with Barcelona over De Jong, but it’s still unclear how the player would react to this.
He has in the past stated that he would like to stay and continue at the Camp Nou, but the club is asking him to reduce his salary in order to guarantee his stay at the club.
While Manchester United are said to also have a deal with the Blaugrana over the player, Chelsea have to key advantage over their rival, they will be playing in the UEFA Champions League for the coming season.
This was one of the sticking points for the player when he rejected the move to Old Trafford, despite the presence of Erik Ten Hag at the club, his former coach at Ajax.
He joined Barcelona in the summer of 2019 after starring for an amazing Ajax team, coached by Ten Hag, that made it to the semi-final of the Champions League only to lose to Tottenham Hotspur.

Barcelona are exploring the possibility of taking legal action against their former president, Josep Maria Bartomeu and three other players in the club over illegalities found in their contract.
De Jong, Clement Lenglet and Marc Andre-Ter Stegen are the three players and them, alongside Gerard Pique signed a contract extension with the club in October 2020 and Bartomeu resigned from his position few weeks later.

The players had signed long-term renewals in 2020, agreeing to forego a large chunk of their wages immediately, which would be settled in the latter parts of their deals.
However, the current administration continues to insist that there were illegal and criminal elements involved in the extension, despite the deal being verified and ratified by the club’s lawyers, auditors as well as La Liga.
