The winger is out of contract this summer, and given he signed for more than €100million back in 2017, Barca don’t want to lose him for free as his contract is set to expire next summer.

The original idea was to sell Dembélé in the summer, but after the Frenchman picked up an injury while on international duty with France at the Euros, keeping him was the only option.

After reports had linked the winger with a possible move to Newcastle United, who recently got acquired by a company with close ties to the Saudi crown prince, it seems like the club (Newcastle) are in a financial position to snap up the player, offering huge sign-on fees and salary if he eventually joins as a free agent.

Barcelona meanwhile are said to have acted quickly to tie him down and are close to an agreement and he will likely sign on reduced terms having been handed a bumper deal back in 2017, struggling to live up to expectations since due to various injuries.

Barcelona continue their quest to reduce the debt of the club and to this end, are asking a number of their players to reduce their salaries to help the finances of the club. The likes of Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba have already agreed to reduce or restructure their current deals.

Barcelona will in the coming days ask two of their unwanted players, Samuel Umtiti and Phillipe Coutinho to reduce their salaries. The club tried to move both players on unsuccessfully during the just ended summer transfer window due to injuries and their high salary and they ended up staying at the club.

Despite the fact that Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann have already left the club, they are not out of the woods yet and both players (Coutinho and Umtiti) are among the club’s highest earners at Camp Nou, and their salary reductions will be key in further reducing the club’s inflated salary bill.
