Barcelona Considering Four Budget Left-back Options – Report

Written by Patrick Echatah

Spanish giants Barcelona want to sign another left-back this summer, but they may have to hunt for a cheap option because they plan to spend a lot of money on Borussia Dortmund attacker Erling Haaland.

More Details

Barca have dropped interest in Theo Hernandez and Jose Luis Gaya as a result, according to Diario AS, and has identified some cheaper alternatives who meet the criteria of “good, nice, and cheap.”

The first name on the list is Alejandro Grimaldo, a former Barcelona defender who has been linked with a return to the Camp Nou in recent months.

Grimaldo appears to be the preferred option, but obtaining him may be difficult. He is under contract with Benfica until 2023 and could cost more than Barcelona’s €4-5 million budget.

Real Betis defender Alex Moreno is next on the list, having made his reputation at Rayo Vallecano before moving to Los Verdiblancos, where he has been a regular. Javi Galán of Celta Vigo is also on Xavi’s list.

Both players are expected to cost approximately €3-4 million, making them reasonable choices for Jordi Alba’s backup next season, according to Diario AS.

The final name on the list is Ajax defender Nicolas Tagliafico, who was linked with a move to Barcelona in the January transfer window.

The only problem is that Ajax did not want Tagliafico to depart without a replacement during the winter transfer window, and they are unlikely to do so again this summer.

According to reports from Spain, Xavi still believes that Riqui Puig can play an important role in Barcelona’s future. This is sort of a story we’ve heard before. Despite a lack in appearances, yada yada yada, Barca still believe in Puig.

At the end of the day, if Puig is to become a long-term success at Barcelona then a loan move might be what best serves both sides. If playing time isn’t included with that “belief”, then what’s the point in believing in him?

Diario Sport reckon Xavi is “delighted” with Puig and “understands that he is giving his all in every training session and has encouraged him to continue like this.” The report also adds that Xavi is “counting” on Puig and “asks him not to give up.”
