The Belgian, who is in the final year of his contract and it looks like Napoli do not want to renew his contract despite the desire of the player to stay at the club beyond his current contract, a move to the Camp Nou might become a viable solution.
It should be recalled that back in 2017, the forward admitted that he regretted not moving to Barcelona despite an interest simply because he didn’t want to play second fiddle to Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.
With Barcelona in need of strikers, the move could suit all parties involved, Mertens gets to play in Europe despite his age and Barcelona get a player who can play as a striker and also as a winger and even as a second striker.
With Napoli all but confirming that the player has no future with them, the coast is clear for Barca to move for the player later in the summer as they try to build their squad and they don’t get to spend much on transfer fee as he would arrive as a free agent.
Martin Braithwaite and Luuk De Jong are the only recognized striker at the club and both not likely to remain beyond the current season, it makes sense that the club would move for Mertens but Barcelona aren’t the only team vying for his signature, report says PSV, Mertens’ former club, are in contention too.

The youngster joined the Catalans at the start of the season on a season long loan move but he has failed to really impress and the club are keen to avoid paying the €10 million obligated to make the loan move permanent if he had made another appearance for the club.
The Blaugrana have confirmed the news today, and the 18-year-old will return to Austria and parent club Rapid Wien. This move will also help them save some wages. Several clubs are already lining up to snap up the young winger with German club, Bayer Leverkusen and Sevilla said to be at the forefront.
