The club looked at the possibility of signing him last summer but couldn’t due to financial constraints. They also tried to loan him, but Ajax wouldn’t bulge. He came through the youth system at Newell’s Old Boys before joining Ajax in 2019 from another Argentine side, Defensa y Justicia.

He is a left-sided centre-back, who is good with the ball at his feet and he helped marshall the defense of the Dutch side in the UEFA Champions League group stage, coming up against the likes of Erling Haaland and helping his team to top their group.

He’s also experienced despite his young age (23-years) and has earned four senior caps with the Argentine national and was part of the Argentine side that won the Copa America last summer.

His club aren’t looking to sell him at the moment but should the right offer be made and the player expresses his wish to leave, a deal can be done between the two teams and with the summer transfer window still 6 months away.

There’s plenty of time to convince both the player and his club, that is if they really want him and can make enough room in their squad to accommodate him.

Meanwhile…

Barcelona coach, Xavi Hernandez has sounded a note of warning to his players, saying that only those who show that they deserve to play will get to play, that no player is too important to be dropped, with regards to Memphis Depay and his expected return from injury.

Depay, before his injury has been ever present in the Blaugrana line up, especially under erstwhile coach, Ronald Koeman.“The same as everyone,” was Xavi’s response when asked about the importance the Depay holds for Barcelona. “In the end, those who merit a place gets one, there’s a lot of competition.

“Luckily we have several options with the first team and there’s real competition there. It’s about a meritocracy. Whoever deserves to play will pay. That’s what I’ve experienced. Whoever is better will play regardless of what their name is.” The Spaniard further added.
