Barcelona President Joan Laporta’s recent claim that they are financially ready to secure Nico Williams immediately was initially met with skepticism, but it appears there’s more depth to his statement than meets the eye.

More Details

Athletic Club is adamant about receiving the full €58m release clause for the transfer, despite fierce competition from Premier League clubs willing to double Williams’ salary.

Despite this, Barcelona has reportedly made significant progress in negotiations with Williams’ agent, Felix Tainta, following a meeting in Barcelona last week, as reported by Sport.

Sources indicate that Barcelona is considering offering Williams a six-year contract to spread out the financial impact, estimated to range between €25-30m annually against their salary cap.

However, uncertainty remains regarding Barcelona’s ability to register Williams, as their current salary cap situation is not confirmed to be compliant. Williams himself is eager to have his future sorted out by the end of July, around the time he returns from his vacation.

Williams, aged 21, is currently keeping his focus on Euro 2024 and has instructed his agent to keep him uninformed about his future prospects. However, there exists a narrow window for Barcelona, as well as Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich, to finalize any potential deal.

According to Sport, while Williams has not specified a deadline, he prefers not to prolong negotiations until the last minute. Ideally, any transfer should be concluded by July to avoid unsettling Athletic Club.

Sport further suggests that if Williams returns from his holiday and resumes training with Athletic, the likelihood of him remaining in Bilbao significantly increases. The onus is now on Barcelona to activate the release clause promptly and present Williams with a contract within the allotted timeframe.

His return from vacation is expected towards the end of July.
