Barcelona Shift Their Focus To Napoli Defender, Could Become Available For A Decent Fee In The Summer

Barcelona despite their focus on the pursuit of Erling Haaland aren’t losing sight of the other areas of the team that needs reinforcement.

More Details

The defense, especially the centre-back position remains another priority for the Blaugrana and they have drawn up a list of players that they feel can help improve their defensive solidity.

The likes of Andres Christensen, Cesar Azpiliqueta, Mathijs De Ligt and Kalidou Koulibaly. Christensen had previously looked like he would leave Chelsea but seems to have found an agreement with the Blues recently and looks less assured despite having an expiring contract.

Azpiliqueta on the other hand might be a much more possible option but given that he is more of a wing-back, the club will still need to sign another player.

De Ligt and Koulibaly previously seem to be out of reach of the club due to their price tag but the latter has now emerged as a serious target after his Italian club reduced his fee from €90 million to about €40 million, a figure that Barca can easily reach.

The defender is set to become a free agent in 2023, and the Naples outfit want to maximise the chance of any profit they can make by selling him early. The report also states that Koulibaly is keen on a switch to Barcelona and will push to leave Napoli if an offer arrives.

That could give the Catalans room for negotiation. Koulibaly is also coming off a sensational AFCON campaign, winning the trophy with Senegal, during which he kept three clean sheets in five games. Further, he averaged 1.8 tackles, one interception and 2.2 clearances per game.

According to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea defender, Andres Christensen will not consider joining another English Premier League side out of respect to his present club should he eventually leave the club at the expiration of his contract with the club.

The future of the player is far from certain as the Blues have made their offer to the player and his agent but they’re yet to get a response, giving hope to the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich who have been monitoring the player for quite some time now.

Barcelona will hope that they can attract him to the Camp Nou in the summer, with defence one of the main areas in need of improvement at the Blaugrana.
