The National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL’s) newest expansion club finally has a name.

More Details

Bay Football Club, a new expansion side in the Bay Area, will join the NWSL in 2024.

The Bay Area was officially granted an NWSL team alongside the revamped Utah Royals in April, as the league prepared to grow to 14 teams.

The club’s majority investment came from Sixth Street, and they are partnered with retired United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) stars Brandi Chastain, Danielle Slaton, Leslie Osborne, and Aly Wagner.

The team’s reported expansion fee exceeds $50 million, a new league record.

“There have been a lot of mascots and silly names associated with our craft. That is not the path that we wanted to go down,” Wagner said at the team’s unveiling Thursday.

The club’s colors will be navy blue, red, and gray, alongside gothic lettering that incorporates imagery of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Meanwhile…

It’s officially World Cup roster season, and the reigning European champions have turned in their final list.

Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Rachel Daly, and more will try to turn England’s excellent 2022 form into their first World Cup championship.

The Lionesses, however, will look a little different than they did at the Euros.

Captain Leah Williamson and forwards Fran Kirby and Beth Mead all will miss the tournament as they recover from injuries.

Mead, who earned Euros Player of the Tournament honors last year, has been making progress in her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) recovery but just ran out of time for a full return.

Perennial contenders Germany and the Netherlands also have released their squads for the tournament.

Vivianne Miedema officially was left off the Dutch provisional roster as she returns from an ACL tear, and Germany star Dzsenifer Marozsán had already removed herself from contention due to injury.
