Becky Hammon Is As Good As Advertised

As Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) awards for May were being debated, no one was surprised that Las Vegas’ Becky Hammon featured heavily in the Coach of the Month conversation.

More Details

Hammon became just the second coach in her first year to win Coach of the Month since the award was invented in 2017.

Hammon is also the first coach to win the award in their first month serving as a head coach in the league.

Hammon’s arrival to the WNBA came with a significant amount of fanfare.

A number of men’s NBA teams had her on their head coach shortlists after her successful stint with the San Antonio Spurs, but none tabbed her to become the first woman head coach in NBA history.

She then got one of the most lucrative coaching contracts in WNBA history, earning over $1 million a year when she signed with the Aces.

The tactic has paid off, with Las Vegas jumping out to a WNBA-leading 10-2 record.

She’s also gotten the best out of former No. 1 draft pick Jackie Young and encouraged 2020 WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson to expand her game.
