He has since been suspended by the club since the case came to light last year August.
Today it was confirmed that the jury found Mendy not guilty of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, while his friend Mr Matturie was also found not guilty of three counts of rape at Chester Crown Court.
However, it’s not over yet for Mendy as more trials are ahead, as the jury were unable to reach a decision on another count of rape and one attempted sexual assault after 14 days of deliberation.
The unanimous verdicts were delivered today by the seven men and four women on the jury. Matthew Conway, from the prosecutor office, said the prosecution will seek a retrial on the counts the jury could not reach verdicts on.
“The prosecution has made a decision. We have made a decision today, which is to proceed on these counts in two separate trials and we seek today a provisional case management.” He told Daily Mail. Trials for these two counts could possibly be heard in June.
For the player, it’s a small victory but it’s still unclear how Mendy will make a comeback to football should he be found not guilty of all charges. It’s being speculated that the remaining trial could be heard in June, but no official word yet. The club have also released a statement on the verdict.
