Club captain Jamaal Lascelles was spotted arriving at St James’ Park, marking his first appearance with the team since suffering an ACL injury in March of the previous year during their dramatic 4-3 victory against West Ham.

His return after 407 days is a welcome development for the Magpies. Howe has repeatedly spoken about Lascelles’ fitness in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the head coach commented positively on Lascelles’ recovery, noting his good progress and satisfaction with his training performance since returning.
“It has been a slow, steady return, he’s certainly not been rushed. Possibly he could be involved before the end of the season but maybe it will depend on injuries with some of the other players within the squad.
“I think maybe for Jamaal it would be better if it was next season but I think if he feels good and has done enough training then [him playing this month] is certainly something we’ll look at.”
Although Lascelles was back with the team for the weekend’s game, he didn’t play. Instead, Emil Krafth came on to strengthen the defense when the team switched to a four-man backline during the match.

Despite not getting game time, Lascelles received a warm welcome from the fans, who cheered loudly when he appeared from the tunnel before the game and applauded him as he warmed up on the sidelines.
Even though he hasn’t played for the past 14 months, he’s still a vital, long-standing member of the club and holds the captain’s armband.
Kieran Trippier, who has frequently shown leadership, felt it was an ‘honour’ to lift the Carabao Cup with Lascelles at Wembley last month. The manager, Howe, has also spoken very positively about the 31-year-old’s contributions.
