40-year-old Christine Sinclair played her final match for the Canadian senior women’s national team during a 1-0 win over 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup co-host, Australia in Vancouver in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Olympic gold medalist was honoured as she played her last match amidst praises and encomiums from teammates and fans.

“Thank you for inspiring all of us,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on social media.

“Your impact on the game, and sports in Canada is something we’ll be celebrating for quite some time.”

Sinclair got the start in front of around 48,000 spectators inside the stadium which was Renard in her honour for the night.

She announced her retirement in October and had a hand in the only goal of the game, flicking Jessie Fleming's corner to Kadeisha Buchanan before Quinn buried the rebound in the 40th minute.
