Canada Soccer’s Big Protest
Written by Oluwaseun Oyediji
The Canada women’s national team returned to training on Sunday, after boycotting training on Friday with the intention of refusing to play SheBelieves Cup games.
More Details
The team began the strike in response to “significant cuts to the national team programs in 2023,” according to a players’ association statement.
“Now that our World Cup is approaching, the Women’s National Team are being told to prepare to perform at a world-class level without the same level of support that was received by the Men’s National Team in 2022,” the statement read.
Canada Soccer broke the job action with threats of litigation to individual players, according to the players’ association, forcing the players back to the field.
“Canada Soccer told us that they consider our job action to be an unlawful strike,” they said in a statement, adding that individual players could be sued.

“As individual players who have received no compensation yet for any of our work for Canada Soccer in 2022, we cannot afford the risks that personal action against us by Canada Soccer will create,” the statement continues.
Canada Soccer said that the strike broke Ontario labour law, likely having to do with a 17-day legal notification period, and the federation “was not prepared to jeopardize the SheBelieves Cup tournament.”
“We will continue to fight for everything we deserve and we will win. The SheBelieves is being played in protest,” longtime Canada captain Christine Sinclair wrote on Twitter.
