“As it’s so fresh, maybe the game comes with a bad conscience. Are we allowed to fully engage and fully celebrate? Is this appropriate?”, he questioned.
He even questioned whether losing the match could in some way help the situation. “This is how I feel. What would it help now if we lose a football match? It will not help. If it would help, I am happy to lose the match”, he said.
“Suddenly we have a war in Europe. This is a horrible situation. You can build this mentality, to protect your team. But, in this case, the issue is too big to be used by us to turn it around. We are emotionally involved, we suffer with everybody”, he added.
Before making these statements, Tuchel already seemed troubled by the fact the Roman Abramovich, Russian Oligarch, is the owner of the club. He thinks this could damage the club’s image. However, on Saturday, Chelsea announced that the ‘stewardship and care’ of the club has been handed over to its trustees.
The Blues have released a statement in recognition of the conflict. “The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace”, announced the club.
