Columbus will try to finish the series when they go to Estadio BBVA for the second leg on May 1. At stake is a position in the tournament final on June 2.

In the 25th minute, Cucho gave Columbus a well-earned series opener during a back-and-forth opening to the game. Together with Russell-Rowe, the talented Colombian striker created a deft combination play that allowed him to finish clinically from the top of the penalty box.

But the advantage would not last long, as the visitors equalised in the 58th minute with a crucial away goal. After Columbus gave the ball away, Jesús Gallardo launched a counterattack down the left side, and his cross ended up at Maximiliano Meza’s feet for a tap-in goal.

But thanks to Russell-goal Rowe’s in the 72nd minute, the Crew made sure they’d start Leg 2 at Estadio BBVA leading the way. The 21-year-old Canadian goalie nodded in a flicked header assist from Sean Zawadzki to cap off a flawless corner kick routine.

Diego Gomez’s ankle injury versus Nashville SC has been a major blow to Inter Miami head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino’s team.

The 21-year-old was carried off the ground in tears after suffering the injury during the first half of the game against the Coyotes. Gomez, who left Libertad of Paraguay to join Miami last summer, has had a fantastic season. Prior to the injury, he had two goals and five assists in MLS games.

“Gomez suffered a high-grade ankle sprain in the first half of Inter Miami’s win over Nashville SC on Saturday. He has begun the recovery process and is expected to be sidelined for approximately six weeks,” the club said in a release.
