Messi’s goal in the 56th minute was the difference in the night’s only all-MLS encounter, helping the defending Supporters’ Shield champions secure a significant away win.
The crucial away goal was scored by the reigning MLS MVP, who deflected a perfectly-weighted ball from Sergio Busquets off his chest in the box, cut to his right and tucked it past SKC custodian John Pulskamp.
The second leg of the series will take place at Chase Stadium on February 25. In the Round of 16, the aggregate winner will play Cavalier of Jamaica.
